about

I first saw Mike Cooper at the London School of Economics (where I was a 1st-year underdgrad) in 1973. I had previously come across him during the folk and blues boom of the 1960s, but this did not prepare me at all for the gig with Lol Coxhill which was the first 'free improvisation' I had ever witnessed: it turned out to be a life-changing moment. 50 years later in 2023 I met Mike for the first time in Valencia where the sun was shining and we talked about many things, although not much about music, which is often the way with me. And then, later the same year, almost 50 years to the day after the LSE gig, I sat and had a listen to Mike's 'Blue Guitar' album. I was blown away by his guitar playing but not so bothered about his singing and so decided to separate the two and have a go at adding some of my own sounds to his de-vocalised tracks. With his blues background (amongst other things) and my country background (amongst other things) there immediately emerged a nice productive tension between these genres which I decided to lay down as the foundation for some new pieces. I sent Mike the first of these efforts to see if he approved, which he did...so off I went. The results are here before you. For me they represent a long-delayed homage to Mike and his music which, 50 years later, is still breaking new ground as we both are on this album.
