about

This album concentrates on a form of jazz improvisation freed from the restrictions of the 'jazz standard.' Obviously, this is a process already completed long ago in the '60s, so the music here is actually pretty old school, although not in the world of pedal steel playing. So this album is an attempt to catch up with everyone else. As always, the pedal steel guitar is used in a way that attempts to be true to the instrument itself rather than any genre, jazz, country, or otherwise. In particular, there is no intention of placing the steel in a 'weird' or 'unconventional' setting as a gimmick...not that there's anything remotely weird or unconventional here anyway! What is more, it does in fact end with a 'jazz standard,' one that is not even played very freely. That's the problem with freedom...it's hard to actually be free for any length of time. 6 minutes and 34 seconds was the best I could manage on this album.
